The Child of Plomo
(El niño del Plomo)
Daniel Dávila | Drama
2021 | 80 minutes | Chile
Mateo leads his babysitter on a mysterious journey to Cerro El Plomo, an ancient Inca summit where an Inca ritual calls for a missing sacred tribute.
Synopsis
Waking from a mysterious dream, Mateo drags Scarlett, his babysitter, away from the Andean ski resort where he’s spending the holidays with his parents off in search of an unknown place. His quest becomes Scarlett’s as the call of the mountains intensifies.
Pristinely poetic, the film illustrates a major Inca ritual, bridging past and present. On February 1, 1954, after many years searching for a legendary treasure in the Andes, two Chilean prospectors discovered the body of an Inca child frozen for more than 500 years on the summit of Cerro El Plomo at 5,400 meters above sea level. The child had died in a ritual sacrifice and was not the treasure they had expected to find, but they decided to take him to Santiago, the city at the foot of the mountains, leaving the mountain without its sacred tribute.
The magnificent Chilean Andes that flank Santiago and a startling soundtrack feature strongly in this singular work where ancient Indigenous traditions resurface in modern-day Chile.
