Ancestral Secrets. Keepers of Indigenous Medicine, Ep. 04 - In the Heart of South America
(En el corazón de América del Sur)
Jota Loyola Crovetto | Documentary
2021 | 53 minutes | Chile, Colombia
In the Amazon, Huni Kuin and Mbyá peoples perform forbidden forest rituals as a final act of resistance against extinction.
Synopsis
Beneath dense vegetation and mighty rivers, South American Indigenous communities preserve ancestral knowledge.
In the Brazilian Amazon, the Huni Kuin practice rituals classified by the West as prohibited. The Shururumá rite—continuous marijuana consumption during music and dance—creates a connection with the forest and culminates in an ayahuasca ceremony.
In Paraguay, the Mbyá face extinction due to land reduction, contamination, and industrial farming. They gather in darkness to perform the never-before-seen Opú ceremony.
After 400 years of colonization, the peoples of central South America continue to resist.
Series Description
Twelve Indigenous communities across the Americas open the doors to medicinal rituals they have kept secret for centuries. They share sacred knowledge that, unlike the modern pharmaceutical industry, does not seek to cure disease but to preserve health.
This series offers a provocative perspective on nature, medicine, trance, and our understanding of well-being.
