Ancestral Secrets. Keepers of Indigenous Medicine, Ep. 05 - El Dorado
(El Dorado)
Jota Loyola Crovetto | Documentary
2021 | 54 minutes | Chile, Colombia
In Colombia, Wayuu women and Amazonian elders reveal El Dorado’s true wealth: ancestral rites that sustain life and community.
Synopsis
For centuries, explorers searched Colombia for El Dorado, believing it to be a city of gold. What they never imagined is that the true treasure was the territory itself—rich in natural resources now vital to preserving life on Earth.
In the Guajira Peninsula, the Wayuu safeguard ancestral knowledge through women. They uphold the Sutapaulu tradition, in which girls entering menstruation are kept in strict confinement.
Deep in the Colombian Amazon, the Negedeka family lives in a traditional maloka. In 2020, the two elders guiding the community die due to the pandemic.
Series Description
Twelve Indigenous communities across the Americas open the doors to medicinal rituals they have kept secret for centuries. They share sacred knowledge that, unlike the modern pharmaceutical industry, does not seek to cure disease but to preserve health.
This series offers a provocative perspective on nature, medicine, trance, and our understanding of well-being.
